Delhi sports new look ahead of Games

first_imgDelhi is game for the action that’s set to follow. It shows in the way it is all dolled up.An adorable topiary Shera with a leafy grin (or grumble, depending on how you look at him) greets all those pinching off their way into Ashoka Road from the India Gate circle. The Royal Cavalcade, a procession made of jute ropes, has been set up outside the state emporia complex on Baba Kharak Singh Marg.In case the Ayodhya verdict has shoved the Commonwealth Games (CWG) out of your mind for a fleeting second, this green wonder is a gentle reminder that finally, the Games, which have created so much hullaballoo in the past few weeks, are less than 72 hours away. The topiary Shera is part of the NDMC’s ‘beautification drive’ to spruce up New Delhi for the 19th CWG. And to say nothing of the drive that actually drove into the historical bulwarks of Connaught Place, almost ruining the heritage district, inconveniencing the citizens and earning the wrath of conservationists. Of course, that should be forgotten like a bad dream, given the sparkling new look that CP is flaunting these days. Besides the India Gate circle, the grassy Shera is also standing guard in front of the Ashoka and Samrat hotels, on Shantipath and at the Talkatora stadium. Anand Tiwari, the NDMC spokesperson, informs that this topiary art was created at various nurseries of the corporation’s horticulture department.”It’s part of our drive for infrastructural upgradation, street scaping and improvement of aesthetics for the Commonwealth Games,” he says.Much larger in scale, however, is the royal procession in jute at the Baba Kharak Singh Marg, that has been set up to complement the Incredible India food court – outside each state emporium will be a stall of ethnic cuisine from that state, an offering from Delhi Tourism as part of its Games’ cultural calendar.Bright vinyl boards outside Modern School, Barakhamba Road. It’s the creation of Ved Pohoja Associates Pvt. Ltd., a forum of artists working on public art projects. Ved Pohoja, the head of the company, informs, “We had conceived the Royal Cavalcade about a year ago but actual work began two-and-a-half months back with a team of around 60 artisans.” Pohoja shares jawdropping bits of facts when he informs that the installation, measuring 120 feet, consumed jute rope worth Rs 12 lakh. “We sourced the rope from factories in Kanpur and Hapur and bought every single metre of rope produced there in the past twoand-a-half months.”YET another pleasant addition to the city scape has been the china- mosaic embossing on the Safdarjung flyover. The flyover, which leads the CWG parkand-drive facility at the Safdarjung airport into the city needed this overhauling especially for its locational importance. “We had strengthened the over- bridge last year. Given its importance for the CWG, we decided to work upon its aesthetics too,” informs Tiwari. The pillars of the flyover too have been adorned with mosaic sport motifs. The work was undertaken by the architects and engineers of the NDMC. “We have added 36 new lights on the flyover too and the work was wrapped up in four- five months,” adds Tiwari. The streetscaping that Delhi has undergone for the CWG may have inspired extreme emotions amongst the residents of the city, and even those who don’t live here, but nobody has been able to ignore the changes that have left an indelible imprint on the face of this city.advertisementlast_img read more
